MEDICAL COUNCIL OF INDIA

GENERAL BODY:  Ist Session (continuing 137th session)

The First General Body of the Medical Council of India after its reconstitution and in reference to Notification issued and communicated by the Central Government, vide letter dated 06th November, 2013 was held on 10th  & 11th December, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Council Office Pocket-14, Sector-8, Dwarka, New Delhi – 110077.


A national meet on Medical Education to reverse the declining standards of medical education was conducted on 12th Sep 2011.
Union health minister Sh. Gulam Nabi Azad was the chief guest at the summit and in the presence of honorable minister, Dr. K.K Talwar Chairman Medical council of india had Chaired the summit for discussion regarding challenges & opportunities on medical Education.
The Board of Governors invited all the medical fraternity to actively participate and to enable the sharing of ideas and to discuss various steps that the MCI is planning in the area of medical education reforms. The summit provided an opportunity to all the participants to engage in deliberations, offer suggestions and design a road map to achieve this goal.

National Meet for Reforms of Medical Education

A national meet on implementation of Reforms in Medical Education has been conducted on 29th Mar 2011 with the following vision:

“To provide quality medical care to all Indians by promoting  excellence in medical education”

The Board of Governors with inputs from leading medical teachers and educationists has developed a new structure for Undergraduate and Postgraduate education. The National Meet was scheduled to discuss the new structure with the invited participants from all over the country. The Vice Chancellors of State Health Universities, State / UT Directorates of Medical Education, Principals/Deans of all the medical colleges and Heads of Postgraduate Institutes were invited for active participation for implementation of the new reforms in Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical education.

Meeting with Health Secretaries

The meeting was held with the health secretaries of all the states on 29th August 2010 and the following issues were discussed:-

  1. Increase of medical seats in existing Government Medical Colleges.
  2. Starting of new Government Medical Colleges in the States having more than 300 – bedded District Hospitals.
  3. Inputs for modification of the current medical curriculum in the light of prevailing regional health issues.
  4. Common Entrance Test (CET).
  5. Uniform pattern of promotional avenues for faculty members of Government Medical Colleges in all the states considering the current diverse patterns.

Meeting with Representatives of the State Medical Councils

An interactive meeting was held with the representatives of 18 States on 09th August 2010 and the following issues were discussed:

  1. Ensuring registration of all medical graduates and postgraduates.    
  2. Current status of State Medical Council and their functions.
  3. Suggestions for “Vision 2015” medical education.
  4. Issues relating to ethics cases, Registration, Good Standing Certificate.
  5. Current issues of the State Councils which need to be solved by this Council.
